Ruth Crawford's practice has concentrated on public law. She was appointed Second Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Executive in 2002. That appointment involves advising, acting and appearing for the Scottish Executive in numerous aspects of public law, with an emphasis on planning. In addition, she has acted for the UK Government and drafted written submissions in respect of challenges submitted to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The most recent of these concerns a complaint by the BBC in relation to orders made under section 4(2) of the Contempt of Court Act 1981.

Ruth also has considerable experience in other administrative matters, such as licensing, mental welfare, provision of pharmaceutical services, the validity of Scottish legislative provisions, professional disciplinary matters and freedom of information.  She has acted in a number of cases for the Scottish Ministers in respect of the civil recovery provisions of the Proceeds of Crime Act. Ruth has also appeared for the Lord Advocate in several extradition appeals.

Her other areas of practice over the more recent years include professional negligence (usually for defenders/insurers), commercial leases and construction contracts. She has been instructed as Junior Counsel in three House of Lords appeals. The most recent of these was her appearance in 2008 for the successful appellants in the case of Common Services Agency v Scottish Information Commissioner, the first appeal under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. Ruth holds instructions for further appeals against decisions made by the Scottish Information Commissioner, which are to be heard in 2009.
