James Wolffe has practised widely in public and commercial law. From 2002 until 2007, he was First Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Ministers. Since January 2007, he has been an Advocate Depute.

Notable cases in which he has been instructed include the Piper Alpha litigation; a leading case about the law of diligence; the challenge to the ban on hunting with dogs; a claim by a smoker for damages against manufacturers of cigarettes; and public-law cases concerning prisoners' rights and the independence of temporary judges.

James studied law at Edinburgh University and Oxford University. He was a member of the Scottish Law Commission's advisory group on contract law.

He co-authored the article on building contracts (Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia of the Laws of Scotland) and contributed to Gloag and Henderson's The Law of Scotland (11th edition) and Macfadyen, Court of Session Practice.
